Jadel Munguia, Assistant Press Secretary at the New York City Campaign Finance Board, joinedYouth Unplugged podcast host Stella Vrapi to discuss career advice and the importance of civic engagement for young people. Stella, an alumna of the NYC Votes Youth Ambassador Program, explores how civic engagement can inspire youth across the country to take initiative and have confidence in themselves.
Voting isn’t the end of civic engagement, it’s the beginning,” said Munguia. “There are so many ways for young people to get involved whether you’re eligible to vote or not – from volunteering for a campaign or a nonpartisan GOTV effort, to advocating for an issue you care about with your local elected leaders, to running for office yourself.
The Youth Ambassador Program is an initiative for New York City high school students who are committed to increasing youth engagement in local elections. This program teaches young people about voting, democracy, and different ways of organizing for change.
"When I was doing voter outreach it was fun helping people register to vote. I attended a naturalization ceremony with NYC Votes and that stuck with me because it was heartwarming to see people finally register to vote. It was an emotional experience," Vrapi acknowledged when discussing voter outreach efforts she participated in through the Youth Ambassadors program.
